LLM optimization is the technical and content foundation that makes AI Optimization (AIO) possible. This guide covers the six essential pillars: server-side rendering, structured data, llms.txt, AI crawler access, content structure, and entity optimization.

1. Server-Side Rendering: The #1 Requirement

AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) do not execute JavaScript. If your website is a Single Page Application (SPA) built with React, Vue, or Angular — and rendered only on the client side — AI crawlers see nothing. Literally an empty <div id="root"></div>.

The fix: Static Site Generation (SSG) or Server-Side Rendering (SSR). We recommend Astro for content-heavy sites — it outputs zero JavaScript by default and pre-renders every page to complete HTML at build time.

2. Schema.org Structured Data

Structured data is how you make your content machine-readable. LLMs use Schema.org markup to understand entity relationships, content types, and organizational authority.

Essential schema types for B2B sites:

  • Organization / ProfessionalService — your company entity with foundingDate, award, memberOf, knowsAbout
  • Person — founder and team member schemas with disambiguatingDescription
  • WebSite — site-level schema with SearchAction
  • BreadcrumbList — navigation hierarchy on every page
  • Article / BlogPosting — content schemas with dates, authors, and topics
  • Service — service offerings with serviceType and provider
  • FAQPage — structured Q&A content

3. llms.txt: Your Site's AI-Readable Index

The llms.txt file is a proposed web standard that provides AI platforms with a curated guide to your site's most important content. Think of it as robots.txt for AI understanding — not access control, but content guidance.

Place it at your domain root (https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt) as a Markdown file with sections for your core content, services, about info, and proof points.

4. AI Crawler Access

Your robots.txt must explicitly allow AI crawlers. Many sites inadvertently block them:

5. Content Structure for Citation

How you structure content directly impacts citation rates:

6. Entity Optimization

Entity optimization ensures AI platforms recognize your brand as a distinct, authoritative entity. This involves:

  • Consistent sameAs links across all schema to your LinkedIn, Clutch, G2, and other profiles
  • disambiguatingDescription on Person schemas to distinguish common names
  • External signals — being mentioned on authoritative third-party sites
  • Wikidata entries where notability criteria are met
