UC San Diego researchers used AI to reveal that a key gene, PHGDH, doesn’t just mark Alzheimer’s — it helps cause it. By identifying this gene’s surprising “moonlighting” role in disrupting brain function, the team found a small molecule, NCT-503, that may help slow the disease. In mouse tests, it improved memory and reduced anxiety — opening a promising path toward future Alzheimer’s treatments.
